DURHAM OR NEWCASTLE?
START YOUR DURHAM TOUR
Begin your journey in either Newcastle and travel to Durham with your local tour guide or start in the heart of Durham on Millennium Square. Here you will enjoy views of the new developments in the city as well as the introduction story to St. Cuthbert (the reason the city stands) and the beautiful Fenwick Lawson statue in the square itself.
DURHAM OR NEWCASTLE?
DURHAM'S COMMERCIAL HEART
THE OLD MARKETS OF DURHAM
Continue into the heart of the commercial city - the Market Place! Here you'll find an array of different architecture & fascinating stories around the market place's statues, the Town Hall as well as the history of the place you are standing in... Have a peak into the traditional Victorian Market Hall before heading up the hill into medieval Durham.

HIDDEN GEMS OF DURHAM
VENNELS & SNICKLEWAYS
As you walk up Saddler Street (named after leather makers in the city) your guide will point out some of significant buildings & stories surrounding these - you may also venture up one of the famous Vennels (snickleways/alleyways) that take you into tiny areas of the city littered with independent shops, cafes and quirky stories.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE
PALACE GREEN AND THE FEEL...
Your climb up the hill is soon rewarded with the breathtaking views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Durham Castle & Cathedral. Enjoy Palace Green in all its glory as your guide brings history to life - the castle, now part of the university, has its own story and the views onto the cathedral from here are simply stunning! If you have booked your entry into the cathedral, you will be able to enjoy a short tour of this magnificent place of worship - discover St. Cuthbert's Shrine, the beautiful nave, fantastic stained glass windows, powerful stories of Prince Bishops, the wonderful outdoor space of the Cloisters and a tale or two about a famous wizard (and other movies filmed in the city & cathedral).

RIVERSIDE WALK
THE BEST VIEWS IN THE CITY
Walk along the back of the cathedral, enjoy views of the Rose Window and peak into a little hidden gem called The College (not for educational purposes) before reaching a totally different atmosphere in the city by the riverside. Walk over one of the many bridges spanning the river Wear and stroll along the river (you may see rowers training or even quite a bit of wildlife!). The views onto the cathedral from here are some of the best - even one of England's famous painters, William Turner, knew the spot and painted the view.
RIVERSIDE WALK
DURHAM SHOPPING QUARTER
SILVER STREET
Continue back onto Silver Street and follow the old path back into the heart of the city and onto the Market Place to end your walking tour.
