WELCOME TO OUR SOPHISTICATED NEWCASTLE PUB TOUR
Enjoy a tour of discover & taste, as we cherry-pick some of the oldest and most iconic pubs in Newcastle! We look forward to sharing their fascinating tales: Many amusing anecdotes emerged from the toon’s local pubs, for example the Tyneside anthem “Blaydon Races”, usually sung at Newcastle United matches, was first performed at Balmbra’s.
We’ll also find out about the rise and fall of local brewers like the iconic Newcastle Brown Ale and the recent resurgence of dozens of micro-breweries making Newcastle the go-to place for independent brewers and beer lovers.
Even today, the Geordies are famed for knowing how to have a good night out and the tour will include some more recent favourites.
At Newcastle Tour Company, the safety & health of our guests are always of paramount importance to us. This Newcastle pub tour has been optimised for post Covid-19 walking tours & follows our health protocols.
NEWCASTLE'S PUB TALES: YOUR ITINERARY
THE BEAUTIFUL CENTURION PUB
Begin your journey with a visit to Newcastle Central Station and the original First Class waiting area, today, one of the most beautiful pubs in the city! The First Class lounged closed in the 1960s but the original decor has been restored and is a work of art in itself.
Pink Lane, formerly notorious as the Red Light District of the city (very close to the station & hidden alley made this quite the spot for illegal activity). What a difference today: jazz bars, wonderfully restored pubs & cafés... Enjoy a drink in one of these stunning buildings or on one of the great roof terraces.
STAINED GLASS, ELABORATELY TILED FLOORS...
If you want a real sense of what drinking in the Victorian days was like – this is your pub. It has two huge stained glass domes built in 1906 and 1937 and elaborately tiled floors with a traditional long bar. It is quite possibly the oldest pub in NCL (making it older than The Old George (which you will see later) and the Crown Posada (also on your tour), according to AAG Archaeologist John Welsh.
A MEMORIAL TO A TRUE GREAT
Visit the former site of the famous Newcastle Brown Ale - right in the heart of the city centre next to St. James Park (home of Newcastle United Football Club). Discover the story of the brewery, its beer and legacy... Quite close to here is also the fabulous Strawberry pub - home to memorabilia of both Newcastle Brown Ale and the football club close to all hearts in the city. This area has a lively past from executions right through to a plane crash...
