ROUNDED STORY OF THE SUNDERLAND CITY
FASCINATING SUNDERLAND WALKING TOUR
Three original settlements on the site – Monkwearmouth where Benedict Biscop founded the Wearmouth/Jarrow monastery; (674) – Bishopwearmouth founded on the south bank in 930, and a small fishing village called Sunderland, (land set asunder) which was granted a charter in 1179.
This tour explores the origins of the city, takes you through the ages and looks at where the city’s regeneration is leading the area into the future.
At Newcastle Tour Company, the safety & health of our guests are always of paramount importance to us. This Sunderland walking tour has been optimised for post Covid-19 Newcastle tours & follows our health protocols.

SUNDERLAND MUSEUM AND WINTER GARDENS
QUITE A SPECTAULAR LITTLE GEM
Established 1846, this was the first municipally funded museum in the country outside London. In 1879, the museum moved to a new larger building next to Mowbray Park including a library and quite spectacular winter garden based on the model of the Crystal Palace in London. Venture into the museum and explore some of the famous exhibits by LS Lowry, discover Wallace the lion and the very first Nissan car built on Wearside.
