TYNESIDE CYCLING TOUR:QUAY TO SEA ALONG THE RIVER TYNE

This classic Tyneside Cycling Tour route follows the last (or first) leg of one of the UK’s most popular long distance cycle trails, the Coast to Coast or Sea to Sea (C2C) route, which connects the Irish Sea and the North Sea across Cumbria and Tyneside.

Setting off from the Ouseburn area of Newcastle our Tyneside cycling tour explores the course of the river Tyne to its mouth at the historic and picturesque seaside town of Tynemouth.

Trace the region’s Roman past at Hadrian’s Wall’s most eastern fort, Segedunum, in modern day Wallsend.

Find out more about Tyneside’s proud shipbuilding past which dominated the banks of the River Tyne for centuries until only one single shipyard remained, the famous Swan Hunter, builders of the RMS Mauretania, the world’s largest ocean liner.

North Shields is famous for its fish quay and the iconic High and Low Light buildings. Tynemouth offers a dramatic coastal setting with its cliff-top ruins of the historic priory and castle, a vibrant village and its beautiful sandy beaches. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some well-earned refreshment before heading back to Newcastle.

At Tyneside Tour Company, the safety & health of our guests are always of paramount importance to us. This Tyneside cycling tour has been optimised for post Covid-19 walking/cycling tours & follows our health protocols.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall is one of the region’s biggest magnets. Segedunum Roman fort guarded the eastern end of this 73 mile barrier and its traces where re-discovered under a Victorian housing estate. There is also a section of the Wall itself and former Roman baths to marvel at. The site sits within one of the greatest shipbuilding yards of Tyneside, Swan Hunter.

ROYAL QUAYS MARINA
This beautiful and award-winning marina is built around the historic Albert Edward Dock. Today part of the 1990s leisure development that includes the Royal Quays Outlet Centre, this area known as Coble Dene was once a mass of dockside railways and sidings leading to the docks. The nearby Port of Tyne is still important today as is the terminal for cruise ships and the daily ferry to Amsterdam.
